Ashley Barnes, Owner & Veterinarian

Dr. Ashley always had an interest in medicine in general but after volunteering for a puppy rescue, she fell in love with veterinary medicine.  She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Colorado State University in 2009 where she graduated Summa Cum Laude.  Afterwards, she did a yearlong internship at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital before settling into general practice in the Boulder area.  Dr. Ashley always dreamed of owning her own hospital and is very excited this dream has come true.  Dr. Ashley believes in practicing high quality medicine tailored to each individual pet and client's needs.  She is also passionate about improving the mental wellbeing of individuals in the field along with strengthening relationships with clients.  Dr. Ashley enjoys practicing all aspects of veterinary medicine but especially loves dentistry, preventative care and ultrasounds.

When not practicing and running a hospital, Dr. Ashley enjoys playing softball, practicing karate, reading and cooking.  Dr. Ashley shares her home with her black cat, Loki and is planning on welcoming a new puppy in the near future!

Dr. Ami decided at age 9 that she wanted to be a veterinarian. She was able to make this dream become a reality when she graduated with both a Bachelors in Biochemistry and Nutrition from Virginia Tech, and a Doctorate from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. After 2 years of practice in Northern Virginia, Dr. Ami moved to Boulder for the lifestyle, and to run a busy veterinary ER. After 6 years in emergency medicine, and 20 years in general practice in the Boulder area, Dr. Ami is proud to join Dr. Ashley at Coal Creek Animal Hospital!

Dr. Ami strives to maintain a healthy work-life balance, while juggling life with her husband, 2 adolescent kids, 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 axolotls, 4 tiger salamanders, 2 gerbils, 2 hermit crabs, and a motley collection of fish, shrimp and other aquatic species. She enjoys traveling with her family,live music, cooking and gardening. Dr. Ami comes from a family of lifelong learners and educators, and embraces this tradition as she pursues her 3 rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, serves as a substitute teacher, and mentors students with interest in veterinary medicine. Within veterinary practice, Dr. Ami has a special love of dentistry, senior pet care, and Addison’s Disease (the best disease in the world!)

In 2006, Erika embarked on her veterinary medicine journey in the sunshine state of Florida when she came across a stray kitten. Seeking both veterinary care for the newly found kitty and a job for herself, fortune smiled upon her as she discovered an outstanding veterinarian and a promising career path simultaneously. In 2012, Erika transported her passion and talent for client services to the beautiful state of Colorado. Nestled in the Boulder area, she continued her dedication to veterinary medicine in a general practice. Fast forward to the present, and Erika takes pride in her role as the Lead Client Services Specialist alongside Dr. Ashley at Coal Creek Animal Hospital.

Erika's professional joy lies in cultivating meaningful relationships within the community, connecting with clients, patients, staff, and vendors alike. At home, she shares her space with her wonderful husband and her purrrfect senior cat, Mugsy. During her leisure days, you'll find Erika wrapped in a cozy blanket with a good book, solving jigsaw puzzles, striking poses on her yoga mat, exploring hiking trails, or playfully brainstorming puns to share with the team during morning rounds. :)

Sarah Andres, Client Service Specialist

Sarah has been in the field of physical therapy for the past 22 years, supervising for the past 15 of those years. She is extremely excited for this career shift to help create a caring space, helping people and animals alike. Sarah is a Colorado native and grew up in Boulder. Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her husband, two sons, her cat Charlie, and her bunny Ash. She loves traveling, outdoor activities, volleyball, running and being on the ninja warrior team with her son.

Here we have Anna, receptor extraordinaire! A lover of animals and their humans. Originally from Colorado. Anna has been a receptionist in the veterinary field for over 10 years. One of her favorite positions was at the ASPCA in NYC working at the emergency hospital. Anna and her husband Adam spend the majority of their time exploring with their three children Oriana 7y, Virgil 6y, and Gabriel 2y. They have two axolotls and hope to adopt a puppers to join their family soon!

Rhonda grew up on a working farm in Iowa with a menagerie of animals. She began her career in veterinary medicine as a technician before she started a family with her husband. After raising 2 wonderful sons, she returned to the field as a veterinary assistant working at a general practice in the Boulder area. Rhonda is proud to join Dr. Ashley at Coal Creek Animal Hospital as a veterinary assistant and inventory manager. She enjoys keeping everything organized at the hospital, filling prescriptions, doing blood draws, and interacting with the clients and their furry family members. Rhonda has a rescue dog named Basil who is always up for a game of fetch, a walk, or a hike up a fourteener. Basil is also a blood donor, helping pets in need.  Rhonda also has a 120 gallon saltwater fish tank full of beautiful corals and fish. She currently volunteers for the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, helping educate hikers about Leave No Trace principles. When Rhonda is not at work or hiking the trails, she can be found on her bike, on a paddle board, on a pickleball court, knitting, sewing, or baking treats!  

Kellyn Brothis, Veterinary Assistant

Kellyn graduated from Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology in 2010, and has worked as a veterinary technician in both Colorado and Alaska. Helping animals has always been her dream, which led her to become a veterinary technician.She is passionate about dentistry, feline medicine, and laboratory procedures. When she’s not at work, you can find her in the mountains, running, hiking/backpacking, snowboarding, brewing beer, or on a soccer field. Her favorite race of all time is Mount Marathon, in Seward Alaska. Kellyn's happy place is at home with her husband, their four cats, two ducks, and rez dog rescue.

Madison began her path in veterinary medicine when she started shadowing Dr. Ashley in high school. She graduated from Colorado State University in 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor of Biomedical Sciences. Madison hopes to attend veterinary school and become a mixed animal veterinarian.

Madison has a background working with wildlife and is rescue certified. In addition to this, she has research experience, is involved with a spay neuter clinic, as well as an organization that aims to provide veterinary care to those who are houseless. 

In her free time, Madison loves to read, crochet, listen to true crime podcasts, and relax with her cat, Goose.

Abigail grew up in the countryside of Texas where her passion for animals began. When she was a young child she used to cry while watching Animal Planet and wanted to pick up every stray animal she could. She moved to Colorado to pursue her dreams of being a veterinary technician in 2015. Abigail graduated from Bel-Rea Institute of Animal Technology in 2020. She is a cat lady by default. Abigail's passions are dentistry and surgery. In her free time you will find Abigail with her daughter at the Denver Zoo or the Denver Museum of Nature and Science with a coffee in her hand.

Marissa Pagano, Registered Veterinary Technician

As a Colorado native Marissa always had a love for animals and nature. In 2020 she combined her love of animals with her passion for medicine and became a veterinary technician. She has a special interest in anesthesia, fear free handling and emergency care. When she isn’t at Coal Creek Animal Hospital you may run into her rollerskating at the local park or at Veterinary Emergency Group in Boulder, helping our more emergent and critical patients. She enjoys hiking and camping as much as cuddling up with a good book at home, surrounded by all of her beautiful plants, her St. Bernard Allie and cats Gemma and Binx.
